In response toThe National Association of Home Builders officially opened online registration for the 2014 NAHB International Builders’ Show (IBS) last week, where the theme will be ‘Expect More.’ As the largest annual light construction tradeshow in the world, the IBS event features scores of the latest and most cutting-edge building products and services. , window manufacturers promoted existing product lines alongside new ones at IBS 2014 to meet the needs of both the new construction and replacement markets.
“The bulk of our business and the basis of our reputation have traditionally been on the remodel/replace side,” said Mark Savan, president of Simonton Windows, which returned to IBS this year after a lengthy absence. “The last time we came to the IBS show … we were still very retrofit-focused. Coming back [to IBS], we’re looking to balance our business.
“We’ve put a series of investments into growing our new construction business, from putting salespeople on the street, to additions to the product line … and we decided that if we’re really serious about new construction, we should come to the Builders’ Show,” said Savan, who is also president ofTherma-Tru Doors.
“As we look out over the next five years, there’s going to be growth in the new construction market,” he added. “We would like to participate in that, and we think we’ve got a great value proposition.”
Ply-Gem also mixed it up in Las Vegas, where it introduced three new exterior colors for its 1500 Vinyl Collection of windows for new construction, as well as new exterior paint color options and a new rigid welded nail fin option for its Premium and Pro Replacement Series windows.
This year also marked the first time that Ply Gem had its Great Lakes Window brand on display at IBS. According to Jim Horn, director of brand marketing, the decision to promote the Great Lakes brand in Las Vegas was based on a perceived increase in dealer attendance.
Hope’s Windows was among the IBS exhibitors focusing on improvements to their existing product portfolios in Las Vegas.
“We make steel windows, but our competitors were adding plastic thermal breaks to improve energy performance,” said Hope’s Brian Whalen. “We didn’t want to change the makeup and integrity of our windows, so we went to work determining how to thermally improve a steel window using steel. Don’t change what works, just refine it,” he said, referring to the company’s Landmark 175 thermal window.
LaCantina Doors will introduce a new class of multi-slide doors and a full range of swing doors at IBS 2014, making it a single-source provider of large opening door packages. While the new sliding door has the same innovation, style, performance and quality found in LaCantina’s folding doors, it also features custom-engineered rolling hardware and AAMA-certified wheels. In addition, the new multi-slide doors incorporate the exhibitor’s signature narrow stile-and-rail profiles used in its folding doors and new swing doors, providing a perfect match for a complete door package, according to the company. Other features include a built-in self-drainage weep system, robust panel widths, and wheels that support heavier weights.
Phantom Screens’ motorized Executive Series screens fit single openings as large as 25 feet wide and 16 feet tall. A solution for screening patios, lanais, porches and other large openings, the Executive screens retract out of sight when not in use, even above an archway or large opening, the exhibitor reports. The screen’s integration with various home automation systems, as well as wind and sun sensors, allows homeowners to create a screen solution that supports environmental and sustainable building practices and delivers energy savings by reducing solar heat gain and decreasing the use of air conditioning, according to the exhibitor.
Protecto Wrap’s Sill Pan Flashing?a cold-applied, self-adhering membrane composed of a tough cross-laminated high density polyethylene surface?is coated on one side with asphalt / recycled butyl hybrid adhesive, or 100 percent butyl adhesive. The custom-designed, one-piece sill flashing tape conforms to the rough sill, creating a continuous sill pan, with clean, 90-degree corners and a watertight seal, the exhibitor reports. The flashing seals around properly installed fasteners and is adaptable to most construction surfaces, forming a positive air/vapor barrier. Protecto Wrap’s flashing offers a 120-day UV exposure rating.
